Showers rarely fail all at once. More often, the warning signs build slowly: a little give underfoot, grout that won’t come clean, a faint smell that never quite goes away. Catching these signs early can help you avoid damage to the framing, the subfloor and, in a two-story home, the ceiling below.
1. The Shower Base Feels Soft, Flexes or Is Cracked
A shower base should feel solid. If it gives, creaks or flexes when you step on it, or you can see cracks, water may be getting underneath. Over time, that moisture can weaken the subfloor and framing. A soft base is one of the most common reasons homeowners call us, and it isn’t something to ignore.
2. The Grout Is Dark, Cracked or Won’t Come Clean
Grout is porous. With daily use it can absorb water, soap and minerals, especially in homes with hard water. If your grout stays dark after scrubbing, is cracking or crumbling, or seems to need constant resealing, the problem may go deeper than the surface. Damaged grout can let water reach the wall behind the tile.
3. There’s a Stain on the Ceiling Below
In two-story homes, a water stain on the ceiling under an upstairs bathroom is often the first visible sign of a shower leak. It can come from a failing base, a worn seal around the drain or water getting behind the walls. If you see a stain, have it checked as soon as possible. The longer a leak continues, the more it can damage drywall, insulation and framing.
4. A Musty Smell or Mold That Keeps Coming Back
Some mildew in a damp bathroom is normal and wipes away. But if mold keeps returning in the same corners, fresh caulk darkens soon after it’s replaced, or the bathroom has a musty smell that never leaves, moisture may be trapped where you can’t see it.
5. Loose Tiles, Failing Caulk or a Shower That’s Simply Worn Out
Loose or hollow-sounding tiles, gaps in the caulk, and yellowed, chipped or cracked fiberglass are all signs that a shower is reaching the end of its life. Many homes built in the 1990s and 2000s around Lewis Center and Powell still have their original showers, and those materials don’t last forever.
Repair or Replace?
Small issues, such as one section of failed caulk, can sometimes be repaired. But when the base is soft, the grout is failing throughout or there’s evidence of a leak, patching the surface often doesn’t fix what’s happening underneath. Replacement gives us the chance to inspect the framing and subfloor before the new shower goes in.
What Shower Replacement Involves
When we replace a shower, we remove the existing shower, inspect the framing and subfloor, and install a durable acrylic shower base with coordinating wall panels and properly sealed joints. Acrylic surfaces are non-porous and grout-free, so they’re easy to clean and maintain. Most shower replacements are completed in approximately two days, depending on the scope of work.
