Acrylic vs. Tile Showers: Which Is Right for Your Home?

When it’s time to update a shower or bathtub surround, one of the first decisions is the material. Tile has been the traditional choice for decades. Acrylic wall systems have become a popular alternative, especially for homeowners who want less upkeep. Here’s how the two compare.

Cleaning and Maintenance

This is where the biggest difference shows up. Tile itself is durable, but the grout between the tiles is porous. It can absorb water, soap residue and minerals, which leads to staining, mildew, regular scrubbing and periodic resealing.

Acrylic wall panels are non-porous and grout-free. There are no grout lines to stain or reseal, and most cleaning is a simple wipe with a non-abrasive cleaner.

Hard Water

Many homes in Delaware and Franklin counties deal with hard water, and homes on private wells around Sunbury, Galena and Ashley may also see iron and mineral staining. On tile, minerals tend to build up in the grout lines, where they’re hard to remove. On acrylic, mineral deposits stay on the surface, so they wipe away more easily.

Water Resistance and Leaks

A tiled shower depends on the grout, the waterproofing behind the tile and the shower pan all staying in good condition. When any of them fails, water can reach the walls or floor structure. An acrylic system uses a durable acrylic base and wall panels with properly sealed joints, which reduces the places water can work its way through. With either material, careful installation is what matters most.

Installation Time

Custom tile work often takes a week or more once you account for setting, grouting and curing time. Because acrylic systems are made to fit your existing space, most bath and shower remodels are completed in approximately two days, depending on the scope of work.

Style and Design Options

Tile offers almost unlimited choices of size, color and pattern, which is why it remains popular for custom, high-end designs. Acrylic systems have come a long way too, with large-format patterns that resemble stone, marble and subway tile, plus solid colors and coordinating trim, shelves and seats, all without grout lines.

Comfort

Acrylic tends to feel warmer to the touch than tile or porcelain-on-steel, which many homeowners appreciate during Ohio winters.

Which Should You Choose?

If you have your heart set on a specific custom tile design and don’t mind the upkeep, tile can be a great choice. If you want a bath or shower that looks fresh, resists hard-water buildup and takes less time to clean, acrylic is often the more practical option for busy households, and it’s what we specialize in.
